1. Want really bright white icing rather than icing that’s just slightly off-white or dull? Try Bright White Soft Gel Paste

When I saw Cheryl recommend Bright White and Bridget recommended it to her, and since both those ladies are amazing cake decorators and bakers, I knew I needed to order this, because sometimes you just want your icing to be white and bright enough to need sunglasses when you’re looking at your cookies. 2. All in all, I was very happy with the way the Strawberry Cake Mix Cookies with Vanilla Cream Cheese Frosting turned out. They were so soft and moist, but…

…I just wished the icing had that POP of really, really white brightness. I can’t wait to try the Bright White out on my next batch of…anything. 3. Have you seen Bridget’s Sock It To Me Cookies? Adorable.   4. Or Cheryl’s Best Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe Cookies using the infamous New York Times recipe? I’ve been wanting to try that one, after playing around with the Cook’s Illustrated Recipe.

  1. A Day in the Life of Matt Armendariz of Matt Bites. I adore him and the peek into his day-to-day life in that post. I had one of the singular best days of my life, ever, with him and Adam last year.

  2. Culinary District. “Offering a hand-picked selection of essential products which include the best imported and domestic food items, commercial cookware, equipment, cutlery, specialty tools, china and glass ware, table top, packaging for food products, and bake ware.”

From exotic chocolate sauces to knives to Vita-Mixes, they’ve got you covered. 7. Or Mango Pickles. They’ve got those covered, too, in case you found yourself with a craving for a product you probably didn’t know existed.   I am obsessed with all things mango and I’d be game for trying those.

  1. This Etsy Shop. I love beautiful, one-of-a-kind anything, and pottery is high on that list.
  2. Did you know that there’s only one space after a period at the end of sentences? I recently learned this typography factoid and honestly, I was shocked. I went through college, and was getting my master’s degree when I got pregnant with Skylar, and have written one or two term papers in my life and was surprised to learn that my junior high typing teacher and English teacher and most every professor I ever took classes from told me to double-spacing after a period. Now I am trying to break myself of the double tap-tap on the spacebar after periods and just give one tap.
  3. I’ve posted more savory recipes in the past week than I have in months, combined. What’s gotten into me?

I better go have an Orange Coconut Banana Donut to make up for it.

What are your Thursday Things? Do you like finding out about new baking products as much as I do? Did you know about the single-spacing after periods rule? Feel free to Link Up anything fun, exciting, tasty, or noteworthy you want to showcase by clicking on the blue button

  1. LorAnn Oils– “Concentrated Flavors (candy oils) for Candy, Chocolate and Baking. The term “candy oil” refers to a type of flavor that is concentrated and undiluted. These flavors are 3 to 4 times stronger than grocery store extracts.” No Artificial Sweeteners, Sugar Free (except Canadian Maple & Maple), Gluten Free, Contain No Vegetable Oils, Certified Kosher

The flavor choices are amazing from peanut butter, marshmallow, pear, to mint chocolate chip and pumpkin. 2. I ordered these woven Tom’s

And these crocheted numbers, but they were both about a half size too big and they don’t come in the size I need.

I paid about $12.50 to have them shipped to me, and then paid another $12.50 to mail them back, and so for $25 bucks, I tried on shoes. That I don’t own. That’s why I don’t order shoes online. I try it every few years, get burned when they arrive and don’t fit. It’s nothing against Tom’s, it could be any company. It’s just too hard to buy shoes over the internet, despite being tempted. 3. A see-through glass and stainless steel toaster by Magimix. The only toaster with a viewing window that lets you watch the toasting process in action.

  1. Easter Story Time Decal Glasses.  A mama and papa bunny nestling with their baby bunny to read a book. The bunny family story hour, I love it.

  2. Marshmallow Madness Cookbook Giveaway for 3 Winners

 6. Axe Dark Temptation Deodorant Technically made for a man, but I like the way it smells, I like the way it works, and I love that it’s about an inch wider than women’s deodorant and that I don’t have to make as many up and down motions and side-to-side motions with it. It’s like using paint roller rather than a paint brush, and I’m all about efficiency. Plus, not smelling like tulips, daisies, and “summer breeze fantasies” all the time is sometimes refreshing.

  1. As long as we’re talking dark, how about Dark Chocolate Chocolate-Chip Cookies Stuffed with Chocolate Covered Strawberries

  2. I went to retrieve this post from my drafts and discovered that none of it had saved, so I’ve just re-done it (fun!), but can’t remember all the things I included in the original post.

  3. These spatulas. Flat on one side, curved on another, with a flat tip. Best of all worlds in one.

  4. Use a spatula and go make Caramel and Chocolate Gooey Bars. You’ll need a spatula, lots of soap and water for your sticky hands. And possibly a treadmill.

What are your Thursday Things? Do you like finding out about new baking products as much as I do? Do you have success with ordering things online? Clothes and shoes are tricky, unless I’m simply replacing a pair of these. I know my size and re-purchase them as needed. Clothes are hard because not only is the sizing tricky, but I am a fabric junkie. If the material isn’t just right in terms of softness or stretchiness, I won’t end up wearing it and so it’s generally better I touch and feel the items in person, and try things on is always preferred to guessing. 1. I was nominated to The Kitchn’s Best Food Photography on a Blog list.

I only have a couple votes, but hey, I’ll take them. Better than none. If you want to vote for me, I’d love it. If you want to vote for other people, they’d love it. You can sign in with your Facebook or Twitter name to register and voting is anonymous. Takes about 1.18 seconds to do. Voting ends on March 2 (tomorrow) so do your voting now. There’s a million super talented photographers, professional photographers, and fabulous bloggers on the list, so to even make the list and be nominated, I was honored. 2. International Delight York Peppermint Pattie Creamer has been making it’s way into my coffee and I really like it. I like Peppermint Coffee-Mate better, but I thought it was seasonal, until I just realized it just became a year-round offering. I think the Coffee-Mate is a little smoother; more pepperminty without being overkill, slightly less sweet, and not quite as thick. However, so far I’ve only been able to find it at Target and not at my regular grocery store. I’ve made a few Target runs recently.

  1. After I saw Jessica post about Girl Scout Cookie lip balm, I had to have it.

I ordered it here. Thin Mints and Samoas on my lips. So wrong, but so right. (Thin Mint-ish brownies have in my belly, see #8 below) 4. I also ordered these because I never met a Starburst that I didn’t love, even if it means applying Starburst lip balm. Beware, you may be tempted to chew lick your lips quite a bit.

  1. Pinterest Not a Pirate Anymore, Helps Site Owners Disable Pins Read more… Very interesting discussion and many of us love our Pinterest, but not everyone loves it.
  2. The winners of the Green Smoothie eBook Giveaway are: jackie @ marin mama cooks Michaela
  3. Lightroom Presets. This is called the Beauty Collection and is just one of many preset collections offered for $19 bucks.

There’s also the Baby Collection, the Fashionista Collection and many more. I love Lightroom and playing around with and tweaking images with different tones, washes, and colors and could go on a preset-buying bonanza. If you told this to me ten years ago, or even a few years ago, that I’d want to spend money on presets, I would have laughed in your Beauty Collection face. 8. If you would have told me a few years ago that I’d be posting St. Patrick’s Day treats ahead of the holiday, or that I even paid attention to food “holidays”, I would have laughed in your face. That is, until you fed me a Triple Layer Fudgy Mint Oreo Brownie. Then I would have stopped laughing so I could concentrate on chewing. Reminiscent of a Thin Mint meets a brownie. We’re back to the Girl Scouts (item 3 above).

9.Scott and I used to run at least two, and somethings three or four, races per month many years ago (usually 5 & 10k’s, sometimes half marathons). They are fond, cherished, and amazing memories we have of our early days together when we had nothing but time on our hands to just…run. Not to mention, when you don’t have a child and are ten years younger, getting up at the crack of dawn to run a race, and pay race entry fees x2 people, racing doesn’t seem as daunting. I’d love to run in the Hot Chocolate Racing Series with Scott, but we don’t have anyone to watch Skylar from oh about, 5:30-8am on a Sunday morning. Surprise, surprise that sitters are in short supply on Sunday mornings at that hour.

Post races are usually orange slices and bananas and water. This one includes post-race chocolate fondue. I wish it didn’t start at 6:45am. However, chocolate may be worth getting up for.

  1. Tip: Buy some of these.

I made something like these meets these with them. Holy moly. Recipe coming soon. What are your Thursday Things? Feel free to Link Up anything fun, exciting, tasty, or noteworthy you’ve made, seen, or want to showcase by clicking on the blue button.

  1. My blog is going to be called Averie Cooks going forward.

I haven’t officially changed the URL, so you will still type in loveveggiesandyoga.com to access my site, but the name of the blog, logo, and some minor cosmetic mini-makeover type changes to my homepage are underway. Those are the technical difficulties I was alluding to yesterday and if you tried to access my site in the past 24 hours and have noticed anything strange, that’s what’s up. I’ve got tech people working on things, but since nothing ever goes according to plan, and I couldn’t just do a big, happy, It’s Done and Here’s the Big Reveal type post, I figured I’d clue you in to what’s been going on and spill the beans rather unceremoniously. 2. I changed my Twitter name to @AverieCooks If you used to follow me at @LoveVeggiesYoga, you don’t have to do a thing. You’re now following me @AverieCooks. Twitter makes it easy to make that change without losing a single follower. My Facebook Fan Page is a whole different story because if you have more than 100 fans, Facebook will not allow you to change the name of your fan page. You have to start from ground zero and create a brand new one with the new name and I’m not sure I want to do that. 3. I changed my Instagram name to AverieSunshine 4. Why did I change the name of my blog? When I started my blog three years ago, I had no idea that I’d stick with blogging, what I’d wind up wanting to blog about, or any of the twists and turns life could or would take. The blog name that suited me three years ago is not the blog name that suits the current focus and direction of my blog today or that I’ve been going in the past year or so. Although I do love vegetables, and I do love yoga, I also love baking, desserts, and cooking in general, so it was time for a new name. Not to mention, the daily emails, comments, and confusion that folks are under when they find my blog based on name only and see something like this plastered on the home page, when they were expecting vegetables and yoga, well yeah, change was needed.

I’m eventually going to change the  URL to averiecooks.com but let’s take things one tech glitch one thing at a time. 5. The new Canon 5D Mark III has been revealed. This is very big news in photography circles. If you’re a photographer, you may want to pre-order now, but first you may want to win the lottery.

  6. I recently posted about Flour and a comparison and discussion.

A reader directed me to this Cook’s Illustrated comparison of all-purpose flours “We set out to learn if there was a single all-purpose flour that could best handle most any recipe. Six months later, we had the answer….” You can subscribe for a free trial to Cooks Illustrated if you want the answer. 7. The winner of the Digital Kitchen Scale & Nutritionist Consultation Giveaway is Paula who said, “I would use a digital scale to weigh ingredients in grams for recipes that don’t also give the US equivalent.” 8. I need a drink. It’s been a couple of very crazy days. But since it’s a little early for booze, I’m going to settle for apple pie in a cup. Spiced Apple Pie Smoothie

  1. If that doesn’t work, I’ll move on to one of these.
  2. And if that doesn’t work, chocolate and peanut butter always works to calm the nerves and make everything right with the world. Peanut Butter Cocoa Krispies Smores Bars

If you’re a blogger, do you like the name of your blog? Ever thought of changing it? Even if you’re not a blogger, thinking about where you were in your life years ago, compared to where you are today, no doubt many of us have changed dramatically, and in many different facets of our lives. No one has a crystal ball and can predict where we’re going to be in years to come. All you can do is take one day at a time and enjoy the ride. Evolving, tweaking, growing, trying new things, changing. It’s a beautiful thing. Changing your blog at a tech level? It’s not a beautiful thing. What are your Thursday Things? Feel free to Link Up anything fun, exciting, tasty, or noteworthy you’ve made, seen, or want to showcase by clicking on the blue button. P.S. iHerb is offering $8 off your order until March 31, 2012. I buy my nutritional yeast, probiotics, bulk spices like cinnamon, stevia, liquid vanilla stevia, fancy honey, and so much more from them. Everything is at least 30 to 40% below retail. Use code AVE630 to save $8 on your order.
